Westende is part of the commune of Middelkerke since 1977.

The point of observation is the highest dune, named locally “De spionekop” (the spy head).

In the front, the Reuse 1 antenna of the Z10 transmitter of medium and short waves.
 
Historically, the Road of the dunes (Duinenweg) is the oldest way suitable for vehicles in Flanders built along the shelter of the dunes.
It is along this road that may be found the oldest houses of fishermen who are now historic buildings.
