Kiel Radio Callsign "DAO"

Kiel MAIL Radio today is a modern Marine Coastal Station transmitting only Data modes.

However, it was not always like that. The old Kiel Radio callsign "DAO" was a big signal on MF frequencies, amongst them 1880,1915 & 1918 KHz

Here are some photographs of the old Kiel Radio, they are a good example of an era that is now gone for ever.

Short History of "DAO": Kiel Radio was put into service in 1946. The receiving station shown above was situated in "Schilksee" on the 20 meter high bluffs of the "Kieler Förde" and the transmitting station approx. 10 km away in "Scharnhagen". Kiel Radio was equipped with remote-controlled transmitters for MF and VHF as well as modern receivers and antennas. Together with the remote-controlled VHF coast stations Flensburg Radio and Lübeck Radio, Kiel Radio handled radio traffic with ships in Baltic Sea and the Kiel Canal. Its services were not only used by merchant ships but also by many sporting vessels.

The following two pictures are (c) Hans-Jörg Pust, DL7DAN and were taken in 1993 on a private visit to the station.

The following pictures have been sent to me by Rolf, DL9CM.
